Search engine optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO), derived from the English „Search Engine Optimization“, is a central Online marketing strategy, The aim is to sustainably improve the visibility of a website or online content in the organic (non-paid) search results of search engines such as Google. This is achieved through a variety of measures aimed at increasing the relevance and user-friendliness of a website for search engines and users. The overarching goal is to drive more qualified traffic to the website, thereby increasing its online presence and potential business goals such as Leads, inquiries or sales.

Basics and components of SEO

Search engine optimization comprises various sub-areas that must work synergistically in order to achieve sustainable success. An effective SEO strategy primarily takes three main areas into account:

  • Technical SEO: This area ensures that a website is recognized by search engines.crawlers can be found, read and indexed efficiently. Important factors here are the website architecture, fast Loading times, Mobile responsiveness and the implementation of robots.txt and sitemap.xml. A central role is also played by the Core Web Vitals, which measure the actual user experience; these include Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for the loading speed of the largest visible element, Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness, which has replaced First Input Delay (FID) since March 2024.
  • On-Page SEO: This involves all optimization measures that are carried out directly on the website. This includes the optimization of Contents (texts, images, videos) with regard to relevant Keywords and user intention, the logical structuring of headings, the use of meaningful Meta tags (Title Tag, Meta Description), a well thought out internal linking and an overall positive user experience (UX).
  • Off-page SEO: These measures take place outside the company's own website and are aimed at increasing the authority and relevance of the Domain to strengthen. The most important factor here is the development of high-quality and topic-relevant Backlinks from other trustworthy websites. Brand mentions and social signals also play a role.

The importance of SEO and current developments in 2025

A high ranking in the organic search results is crucial for business success in the digital space. The majority of clicks are on the first search results, which is why top positioning increases visibility enormously and reaches the target group more precisely. This leads to an increase in relevant website traffic and, in the long term, to more leads, sales and a stronger Brand awareness.

In 2025, SEO remains a dynamic and continuous process that must adapt to the constant updates of search engine algorithms. Current developments increasingly emphasize the importance of E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) as Google's central quality concept. Although E-E-A-T is not a direct Ranking factor Google's algorithms give more weight to content with strong E-E-A-T signals and it is a fundamental part of the quality guidelines. Furthermore AI-supported search algorithms, The Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) is changing the landscape by transforming search results and the presentation of information. Companies must increasingly focus their content on relevance, user intent and trustworthiness to remain successful in this changing environment.
