Artificial intelligence (AI), also known as Artificial Intelligence (AI), is a branch of computer science that deals with the development of systems that can simulate human cognitive abilities. This includes learning, understanding, problem-solving, decision-making, speech recognition, image analysis and creativity. In essence, the aim is to enable machines to learn from experience, recognize patterns and perform tasks independently without having to be explicitly programmed for each individual step.
Basics and functionality
Modern AI systems are based on complex algorithms and the processing of large amounts of data. A central element of this is the machine learning (Machine Learning, ML), in which algorithms are trained by analyzing sample data in order to identify rules and patterns independently. Within machine learning, deep learning has proven to be particularly powerful. It uses artificial neural networks with several layers, which are modeled on the structure of the human brain, to learn and map even more complex relationships.
The development of an AI system typically involves the following steps:
- Data collection: Collecting relevant information (texts, images, sounds, etc.) to serve as raw material for learning.
- Data preparation: Cleansing and structuring the data in a format that the AI system can understand.
- Algorithm selection: Selection of the appropriate set of rules for the specific task.
- Model training: The system learns to make predictions or decisions based on the processed data.
- Model test and use: Review of performance and subsequent implementation, often with the ability to continuously learn and adapt to new data.
Areas of application and future prospects
Artificial intelligence is already permeating and significantly shaping numerous areas of everyday life and the economy. The diverse areas of application include
- Automation: Increased efficiency in industry (Industry 4.0) and administration through automated processes.
- Personalization: Recommendation systems in the E-Commerce (e.g. on Amazon or Netflix) and personalized advertising.
- Speech and image recognition: Digital assistants (Siri, Alexa), facial recognition, as well as analysis and interpretation of visual content.
- Medicine: Support with diagnoses, treatment planning and medical research.
- Autonomous systems: Development of self-driving vehicles and robots.
- Marketing & SEO: Analysis of Market trends, Customer behavior, Content creation and optimization.
Research focuses on the further development of existing methods and the development of new fields, for example through generative AI, that can independently create content such as texts, images or videos. While current AI systems are primarily designed as „weak AI“ (Narrow AI) for specific tasks, „strong AI“ (Artificial General Intelligence, AGI) - a system with a human-like, universal mind - remains a long-term research goal. In July 2025, the global AI landscape is characterized by high investment momentum and broad acceptance in all industrial sectors. In parallel with technological advances, ethical considerations and the development of responsible AI strategies are becoming increasingly important.
