AI Overviews (Google SGE)

AI Overviews, originally known as Google Search Generative Experience (SGE), represent a transformative evolution of Google’s search results. This feature delivers AI-generated summaries of information right at the top of search results pages (SERPs), often referred to as ‘Position Zero’. It was officially launched in May 2024 and has since been rolled out globally to provide users with faster and more comprehensive answers to their search queries.

How it works and its objectives

AI Overviews use advanced generative AI models, including Google’s Gemini (formerly PaLM 2), to analyse queries and synthesise information from a wide range of relevant web sources. Unlike traditional featured snippets, which often display direct text extracts, AI Overviews generate standalone, context-rich summaries. These answers can include not only text but also images and videos, enabling a multimodal and more dynamic user experience. The main aim is to reduce the effort involved in searching by enabling users to understand complex topics more quickly and gain insights without having to visit multiple web pages.

Google primarily implements AI Overviews for information-driven and complex search queries where a summarised overview is particularly helpful. Sources that the algorithm classifies as authoritative and trustworthy are linked within the Overview. Users also often have the option to ask interactive follow-up questions to delve deeper into a topic.

Impact on SEO and optimisation strategies

The introduction of AI Overviews is having a profound impact on search engine optimisation (SEO). A key change is the potential for so-called ‘zero-click searches’, where users find the information they need directly in the overview and no longer click through to an external website. Studies show that this can lead to a decline in organic click-through rates of between 18% and 64%, particularly for information-oriented keywords.

For SEO specialists, this means adapting their strategies. To feature in AI Overviews and generate traffic, the following points are crucial:

  • Excellence and E-E-A-T: Content must demonstrate the highest levels of expertise, experience, authority and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), as Google favours sources with strong brand authority and expertise.
  • Structured data and semantics: The use of structured data (Schema markup) and semantic SEO helps AI to better understand and process content.
  • Content quality and relevance: Create accurate, comprehensive and well-structured content that directly answers specific questions and offers added value beyond the standard. Content should aim to answer questions clearly enough to be synthesised by AI.
  • Informative and comparative content: Content that offers comparisons, definitions or detailed guides is often well-suited to appearing in AI Overviews.
  • Monitoring and adaptation: Continuous analysis of search performance and a willingness to adapt your strategy are essential, as the implementation and algorithms of AI Overviews are constantly evolving.

Although AI Overviews are reshaping the competitive landscape, they offer a new form of visibility and authority in search results for websites whose content is cited.
