Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), derived from the English term ‘Search Engine Optimisation’, is a key online marketing strategy aimed at sustainably improving the visibility of a website or online content in the organic (unpaid) search results of search engines such as Google. This is achieved through a variety of measures designed to increase a website’s relevance and user-friendliness for both search engines and users. The overarching aim is to drive more qualified traffic to the website, thereby boosting its online presence and helping to achieve potential business objectives such as leads, enquiries or sales.

The basics and components of SEO

Search engine optimisation comprises various sub-areas that must work in synergy to achieve sustainable success. An effective SEO strategy primarily takes three key areas into account:

  • Technical SEO: This area ensures that a website can be efficiently found, read and indexed by search engine crawlers. Key factors here include website architecture, fast loading times, mobile responsiveness and the implementation of robots.txt as well as sitemap.xml. The Core Web Vitals also play a key role in measuring the actual user experience; these include Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for the loading speed of the largest visible element, Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability, and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness, which replaced First Input Delay (FID) in March 2024.
  • On-page SEO: This refers to all optimisation measures carried out directly on the website. This includes optimising content (text, images, videos) for relevant keywords and user intent, structuring headings logically, using meaningful meta tags (title tag, meta description), implementing a well-thought-out internal linking structure, and ensuring an overall positive user experience (UX).
  • Off-page SEO: These measures take place outside your own website and aim to strengthen the domain’s authority and relevance. The most important factor here is building high-quality, topic-relevant backlinks from other trustworthy websites. Brand mentions and social signals also play a role.

The importance of SEO and current developments in 2025

A high ranking in organic search results is crucial for business success in the digital space. The vast majority of clicks go to the top search results, which is why a top ranking significantly boosts visibility and enables you to reach your target audience more precisely. This leads to an increase in relevant website traffic and, in the long term, to more leads, sales and greater brand awareness.

In 2025, SEO will remain a dynamic and ongoing process that must adapt to the constant updates to search engine algorithms. Recent developments have increasingly emphasised the importance of E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) as a key quality concept for Google. Although E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking factor, Google’s algorithms give greater weight to content with strong E-E-A-T signals, and it is a fundamental component of the quality guidelines. Furthermore, AI-powered search algorithms, such as Google Search Generative Experience (SGE), are shaping the landscape by transforming search results and the presentation of information. Businesses must increasingly align their content with relevance, user intent and trustworthiness to remain successful in this evolving environment.
