KI Agent

A AI agent (Artificial Intelligence Agent) is an advanced software system designed to perform tasks autonomously by perceiving its environment, processing information and making independent decisions to achieve predefined goals. It acts with minimal human interaction and thus differs significantly from traditional, rule-based programs or simple Chatbots. These systems generally use Large language models (LLMs) as a core component of their thinking and planning skills.

Basics and functionality of an AI agent

An AI agent is characterized by specific core principles that enable it to work intelligently. These include

  • Autonomy: The agent acts and makes decisions independently, without constant human supervision.
  • Goal orientation: Its actions are geared towards achieving clearly defined goals and maximizing success.
  • Perception: It collects and interprets data from its digital environment via interfaces or sensors.
  • Thinking and deciding: Based on collected information, internal models and algorithms, the agent makes well-founded decisions, often using complex neural networks.
  • Action: It executes planned steps and actions by accessing a range of available tools such as APIs or external databases.
  • Learning ability: A AI agent can learn from experience, continuously evaluate its performance and dynamically adapt and improve its behavior.

The typical work cycle of an AI agent follows the so-called agent loop, which comprises the phases of observing, planning and acting. First, the agent takes in information from its environment (Observe), then creates a plan to achieve a given goal (Plan) and then executes this plan using available tools (Act). In doing so, the agent breaks down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

Areas of application and relevance

AI agents are used in a wide range of industries and business areas and are a key driver of increased efficiency and innovation. Their ability to automate complex, repetitive tasks relieves the burden on human workers and enables data-based, rapid decision-making.

The implementation of AI agents enables companies to design their processes independently around the clock and with a high degree of consistency and scalability. Forecasts indicate that at least 15 percent of daily business decisions could be made autonomously by AI by 2028.
