Claude AI is a family of great Language models (Large Language Models, LLMs) and a generative AI-Chatbot, which was developed by the American research company Anthropic. These systems are designed to understand and process natural language and generate human-like responses. It can efficiently handle a wide range of tasks in the areas of text processing, analysis and problem solving.
What is Claude AI?
At its core, Claude AI is a progressive AI system, which is based on profound machine learning based. Anthropic, the developer company, places a special focus on the safety and ethical alignment of its AI models. This is achieved through the so-called „Constitutional AI“ approach, which aligns Claude with a set of ethical guiding principles to act in a helpful, honest and harmless way. Originally launched in March 2023 with Claude 1, the model range has continued to evolve ever since.
The Claude model family at a glance
Anthropic offers various Claude models that are tailored to different performance requirements and areas of application. The current main family, Claude 3, was launched in March 2024 and comprises three models. Further developments led to the introduction of the Claude 4.5 models by November 2025.
- Claude 3 Haiku / Claude Haiku 4.5: This is the fastest and most cost-effective model in the family, optimized for near-instant response times. It is ideal for simple queries, quick summaries and tasks where speed is critical. Claude Haiku 4.5 was released in October 2025.
- Claude 3 Sonnet / Claude Sonnet 4.5: Sonnet represents a balanced compromise between intelligence and speed and is especially designed for enterprise use. It offers high performance on many workloads and is effective for tasks that require fast responses and a good understanding of complex information. Claude Sonnet 4.5, available since September 2025, is cited by Anthropic as the recommended model for most use cases and is excellent for agents, coding and computer interaction.
- Claude 3 Opus / Claude Opus 4.5: As the most intelligent model in the range, Opus delivers industry-leading performance for highly complex tasks. It is characterized by deep understanding and human-like thinking capabilities and is predestined for sophisticated analysis and comprehensive problem solving. Claude Opus 4.5 was released in November 2025.
Core functions and areas of application
The Claude models are characterized by a number of core functions that make them versatile:
- Multimodality: Claude accepts and processes not only text, but also image and audio input, enabling it to analyze and interpret visual information.
- Extended context window: With context windows of up to 200,000 tokens on most models (and up to 1 million tokens in beta versions, with 2 million tokens in testing), Claude can handle extremely long documents and complex conversations without losing track.
- Code generation and analysis (Claude Code): The models provide extensive support for programming tasks, from code generation to debugging. Claude Code is an agent-based command line tool launched in February 2025, and a web version and the GUI-based version „Cowork“ (research preview since January 2026) extend accessibility to non-technical users.
- Computer use: With the „Computer Use“ feature, which has been continuously improved since October 2024 (in beta with Claude 3.5 Sonnet), Claude can interact with a computer's desktop environment to automate multi-step tasks across different applications.
- Artifacts function: This capability, introduced with Claude 3.5 Sonnet, allows Claude to create code in a separate window and display the rendered output, such as SVG graphics or Websites, in real time.
- Citations: To increase trustworthiness, Claude can provide detailed references to the sources used.
Claude AI is accessible via the web interface claude.ai and via APIs for developers and is used in large cloud platforms such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI and Microsoft Foundry.
