„Claude Cowork“ is an innovative, agent-based AI function from Anthropic, which enables the Claude AI model enables complex, multi-step tasks to be carried out autonomously on a user's computer. It extends the capabilities of Claude beyond those of a pure Chatbots by taking direct action in the digital working environment.
Functionality and core features
In contrast to a conventional chatbot that responds to requests, Claude Cowork plans and implements tasks independently. The user describes a desired result and Claude Cowork creates a detailed plan, divides it into subtasks if necessary and executes the steps independently.
- Autonomous task execution: Claude Cowork can perform tasks such as organizing files, creating formatted documents, synthesizing research data or Analysis of data records take over.
- File system access: After explicit authorization by the user, Claude Cowork can read and edit files in selected local folders and create new files.
- Integrations: Means Plugins and connectors, Claude Cowork can be connected to external tools, such as the Chrome browser, to accomplish tasks that require web access.
- Agentic architecture: The function is based on the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, but is designed for non-developers with a simplified user interface.
- Security: Tasks are executed in an isolated virtual machine (VM) on the user's computer, which ensures separation from the main operating system and provides controlled access to files and networks. Users remain in control and must explicitly confirm significant actions.

Claude Cowork was developed to automate routine office tasks and increase productivity in various professional fields, including Marketing, sales, legal and data analysis. It allows users to focus on more strategic and creative aspects of their work while AI takes over the execution.
The feature was introduced on January 12, 2026 as a research preview and is currently available in the Claude Desktop App for macOS and since February 10, 2026 also for Windows. Access requires an active subscription to the Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.
