Keeping an eye on SEO costs: a glowing bar graph in the dark as a metaphor for the price and performance of SEO

SEO Costs in 2026: What You Can Realistically Expect

SEO costs vary greatly: some quotes start at 500 euros a month, whilst others are around 5,000 euros. The difference depends on the scope of the work, the level of competition and the condition of your website. We’ve categorised the most common pricing models and set out the figures you can expect.

For ongoing agency support, SEO costs in Germany usually range between 500 and 5,000 euros per month, as outlined by t3n in a price overview dated 27 September 2025. At the lower end of the scale is a local website with manageable competition; at the upper end is a nationwide online shop in a highly competitive market. This range is only of limited help in assessing a quote as long as the underlying factors are missing. It becomes useful as soon as you know the three factors that drive the price: the condition of your website, the intensity of the competition and the scope of the agreed support. All three can be roughly estimated before the initial quote is drawn up, and it is precisely this that determines the number of working hours a provider must budget for each month.

These factors determine your SEO costs

The starting point is the most decisive factor, as search engine optimisation (SEO) always builds on what already exists. A website that has grown over the years, with 2,000 URLs, duplicate content, outdated redirect chains and slow loading times, will tie up working hours for months on end before the first new page is even created. A well-structured ten-page site takes a fraction of that time, because the technical foundation is already in place. That’s why almost every collaboration begins with an SEO audit, which reveals the actual workload and derives a specific figure for your particular case from the rough estimate.

The second factor is the level of competition in your market. A trades business that wants to be found in its own town and neighbouring areas relies primarily on local SEO and can get by on a smaller budget, as the number of serious competitors remains manageable. Anyone competing nationwide against comparison websites and large corporations needs technology, content and link building all at once and over a longer period. Added to this is your own objective as a third factor: a ten per cent increase in search traffic costs noticeably less than doubling the number of enquiries. If you consider these three points for yourself before the first meeting, you’ll receive quotes more quickly and with better comparability.

Hourly rate, monthly flat fee or project price

Three billing models are common, and most providers combine them. In an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO service providers, 78.2 per cent work on a monthly flat-rate basis, 48.9 per cent also offer project-based pricing, and 34.8 per cent charge by the hour. The average agency hourly rate in this survey was $98.90, whilst the average monthly flat rate was $3,209. The flat rate is the dominant model because search engine optimisation is designed as an ongoing task and both parties need planning certainty throughout the year.

Which model is suitable depends on the task at hand. The monthly flat fee covers ongoing work relating to content, technical aspects, analysis and adjustments; these tasks continue on an ongoing basis, as we have described in ‘SEO is not a one-off project’. For clearly defined projects, the project price is the more transparent model, as the effort involved and the outcome are determined in advance — typical examples include a technical audit, keyword research prior to a relaunch, or the overhaul of a product category. You can use the hourly rate for consultancy, in-house training and second opinions on ongoing measures. A combination of a small flat fee and project budgets drawn down as and when required works well if you take on parts of the implementation yourself.

Price ranges for the German market

The following figures are taken from the aforementioned t3n overview and reflect the range of prices in the German market. Internationally, the figures are similar: in December 2025, Backlinko analysed data from over 300 SEO experts and cited figures of $501 to $1,000 per month for small businesses, $1,001 to $2,500 for medium-sized businesses and $2,501 to $5,000 for competitive sectors. Use these ranges as a benchmark when comparing two quotes: a price significantly below the range usually means fewer working hours per month, not a cheaper process. When comparing quotes, also separate one-off items from ongoing support, as many quotes include the audit and the first wave of content in the initial months, making them appear more expensive. The audit will ultimately reveal your actual costs.

  • Agency hourly rate: 80 to 300 euros
  • Freelancer hourly rate: 50 to 150 euros
  • Ongoing support, small businesses: 500 to 1,500 euros per month
  • Ongoing support, larger scope: up to 5,000 euros per month
  • Technical SEO audit, one-off: 2,000 to 8,000 euros
  • Keyword research, one-off: from 1,500 euros
  • Content optimisation: 100 to 500 euros per page
  • Link building as a separate item: from around 2,000 euros per month
  • SEO tools: 100 to 400 euros per month

How to recognise a reputable quote

The clearest warning sign comes from Google itself: ‘No one can guarantee the number one spot on Google,’ according to the official documentation for website operators. Anyone who promises fixed rankings or advertises having special connections with Google is selling chance at a fixed price. A sound quotation describes services, time required and performance metrics in such detail that you can compare it, item by item, with a second quotation. As an SEO agency in Düsseldorf, we disclose these points before we begin working together — the following list will help you assess any provider.

  • Services listed individually: technical aspects, content, link building and reporting, with the estimated time allocation for each
  • Measurable metrics: visibility, rankings, organic search traffic and resulting enquiries
  • Contract term and notice period: both to be set out in writing, including provisions for data export at the end of the contract
  • Access to your data: Analytics, Search Console and all tool access details are managed by you and remain under your control
  • Transparency regarding changes: Google advises that all modifications made to the website should be disclosed
  • Testimonials with figures: Google expressly recommends asking for examples of previous work and success stories

FAQs on SEO Costs

How much does SEO cost per month?

Small businesses in Germany pay between 500 and 1,500 euros a month for ongoing support, whilst larger projects can cost up to 5,000 euros (t3n, September 2025). The deciding factors are competition, website size and the agreed scope of services. A quotation that does not specify the number of working hours cannot be compared with any of these ranges.

At what budget does SEO become worthwhile?

A rule of thumb based on practical experience: the budget should cover at least one full working day per month. With agency hourly rates ranging from 80 to 300 euros, this equates to around 640 to 2,400 euros per month. Smaller budgets can cover individual measures, such as content optimisation for 100 to 500 euros per page or a one-off audit.

How long does it take for SEO costs to pay off?

The first results usually become apparent after four to twelve months; according to Backlinko, the phase where tangible returns begin is after twelve to 24 months. You should therefore calculate SEO costs over a year rather than assessing individual months. We have described the typical timeline in detail under ‘How long does SEO take?’.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

In terms of hourly rates: freelancers charge between 50 and 150 euros, whilst agencies charge between 80 and 300 euros (t3n, September 2025). In return, agencies cover technical aspects, content and link building within the same team, which saves on coordination efforts for larger projects. For narrowly defined tasks, an experienced freelancer is often the more cost-effective choice.

Is it worth having an in-house SEO specialist on your team?

Yes, once you reach a certain scale. An in-house role costs between 45,000 and 80,000 euros in annual salary plus ancillary costs, plus 100 to 400 euros a month for tools (t3n, September 2025). Compare this with the annual total of your agency’s flat fee and with the workload you can sustain over the long term.
