Conversion tracking

Conversion tracking is a central process in the Online marketing, which enables the recording and analysis of specific user actions on a website or in an app. These actions, known as conversions, represent predefined goals that are highly relevant to the success of a digital business model or marketing campaign. By precisely tracking these actions, a company gains detailed insights into the effectiveness of its digital strategies and can make its business success measurable.

Why is conversion tracking essential?

Without conversion tracking, a marketer is flying blind. They do not know which marketing channels, campaigns or elements of a website actually lead to the desired business results. The implementation of conversion tracking makes it possible to precisely determine the return on investment (ROI) of advertising expenditure and to optimize budgets in a targeted manner. It provides the necessary data to make fact-based decisions and continuously improve the user experience. A company can thus recognize where potential customers drop off or which content performs particularly well. This leads to a more efficient use of resources and an increase in overall performance.

How does conversion tracking work?

The technical foundation of conversion tracking is the integration of special tracking codes, often in the form of pixels or JavaScript snippets on the website or in the app. These codes are usually generated via a tag management system, such as the Google Tag Manager, implemented. As soon as a user performs a defined conversion action, this is registered by the tracking code and sent to an analysis tool such as Google Analytics 4 or Matomo. There the data is collected, processed and prepared for detailed reports.

Typical conversions include:

  • Purchases in one Online store
  • Filling out and sending a contact form
  • Downloads of documents (e.g. white papers, brochures)
  • Newsletter subscriptions
  • Telephone calls via a number displayed on the website
  • Clicks on external links
  • Registrations for a service or event

The correct setup and maintenance of conversion tracking requires expert know-how, especially with regard to compliance with data protection regulations such as the GDPR. Precise configuration ensures that all relevant data is recorded in compliance with the GDPR and can be interpreted correctly.
