Progressive Web Apps

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a modern web application that combines the reach and accessibility of a website with the functionality and app-like experience of native mobile applications. It is accessed directly via the web browser and can be used on various devices and operating systems, such as Android and iOS, regardless of platform. Installation via an app store is not strictly necessary, as the user can add the PWA directly to their device’s home screen.

Features and technical foundations of PWAs

PWAs are characterised by specific features that significantly enhance the user experience:

  • Reliability: Content loads even with a poor or non-existent internet connection, as it utilises offline functionality via so-called service workers. These JavaScript scripts run in the background and cache important data and assets.
  • Speed: PWAs respond quickly to user input, offer short loading times and smooth interactions, similar to a native app. This is also achieved through Service Workers and optimised caching.
  • Engagement: They offer an engaging user experience similar to that of a native app. This includes features such as push notifications, the option to add them to the home screen (‘Add to Home Screen’) and a full-screen mode without the browser interface.

The technical foundation of a PWA is based on standard web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Specific APIs and concepts are also utilised:

  • Service Workers: These background scripts enable offline caching, push notifications and the updating of content in the background.
  • Web App Manifest: A JSON file that provides the browser with information about the web application, such as its name, icon, launch URL and display options relevant to its ‘installation’ on the home screen.
  • HTTPS: Secure data transmission via HTTPS is essential for PWAs, as it ensures the confidentiality and integrity of data and is a prerequisite for the use of service workers.
  • Responsive design: PWAs are designed to automatically adapt to different screen sizes and devices to provide a consistent user experience.

Benefits for users and businesses

Progressive Web Apps offer significant benefits for both end users and businesses:

  • For users:
    • No need to install from the App Store: Direct access via a URL, without having to go via app stores, saves time and storage space on the device.
    • Platform independence: A PWA works on virtually any device and operating system, ensuring widespread availability.
    • Offline capability: Key content remains accessible even without an active internet connection.
    • App-like experience: Fast loading times, smooth navigation and push notifications enhance the user experience.
  • For businesses and SEO:
    • Increased visibility and SEO benefits: PWAs can be indexed by search engines, which increases their reach compared to native apps. Google views aspects such as fast loading times and mobile-friendliness positively, which can impact search rankings.
    • Lower development costs: As a single codebase is used for all platforms, there is no need for separate development for iOS and Android, which reduces costs and maintenance effort.
    • Improved user engagement and conversion rates: The seamless, fast and reliable experience leads to longer session durations, lower bounce rates and increased conversions.
    • Independence from app stores: Companies are not bound by the guidelines and commission models of app stores.

By combining these advantages, Progressive Web Apps represent a forward-looking solution for an effective digital presence that meets both the needs of modern users and the strategic objectives of businesses.
