Opaque, unpredictable, somehow scary. But here's the good news: you don't have to understand them like a data scientist understands a Data analysis. You just need to know what they react to. And that's exactly what we're looking at now. Without buzzword bingo, without hype. Simply the mechanics that decide on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and co. whether your content is seen - or disappears into nirvana.

Every platform ticks differently

What works on Facebook flops on TikTok. Sounds banal, but is constantly ignored. Every platform has its own Algorithm, which reacts to different signals.

Twitter (or X, whatever): Location, language, user interactions. The algorithm evaluates, with whom you exchange ideas and how relevant your tweets for this Bubble are.

FacebookEngagement level, quality, relevance. The more comments and shares, the better. But be careful: Clickbait is penalized. The algorithm is now pretty good at it, recognize cheap tricks.

InstagramQuality and relevance of posts, interaction history. Those who regularly interact with your posts will receive more of it to see. Logical, but important.

LinkedInSimilar to Instagram - the focus is on quality and relevance. Who here Content who belongs to the target group (keyword Brand positioning!) fits, is rewarded.

TikTok and YouTube: Trends are mandatory, followers don't matter

One thing counts with TikTok: If you use the native features? Effects, sounds, text treatments - these are not gimmicks. This is food for the algorithm. And here's where it gets interesting: follower numbers don't play a role in visibility. An account with 100 followers can go viral if the content is right. YouTube works in a similar way. The algorithm looks at video performance, context and users' previous viewing behavior. Once you have collected clicks on cooking videos, more of them are suggested. The System learns with.

Commitment is the lever

Here comes the part that you can influence directly: Engagement. Comments, shares, likes - these are the Signals, that every algorithm understands. But how do you get them?

Ask questions. Sounds simple, but it works. People are more likely to comment when they directly addressed become.

Starts debates. Be careful not to provoke at all costs. But Controversial topics generate reactions. And reactions are commitment.

Creates shareable content. Infographics, lists, instructions - everything that users need for later save or with other share. Saves and Shares are Gold worth.

Experimentation is a must. What works today may work differently next month. Algorithms are constantly being adapted. If you stick rigidly to one Content strategy loses. Algorithms are tools. No more, no less. If you understand how they work, you can use them to your advantage. If you ignore them, you give away reach. The basics are the same everywhere: Quality, Relevance, Commitment. The rest is fine-tuning - and the best way to learn this is by trial and error.

FAQs on social media algorithms

How do social media algorithms work?

Social media algorithms decide what content users see. They evaluate factors such as Commitment (Likes, comments, shares), Relevance (does the content fit the target group) and Quality (clickbait is recognized and penalized). Each platform weights these factors differently. Instagram prioritizes interaction history, TikTok native features, LinkedIn professional relevance.

Why don't my followers see my posts?

Algorithms only show content to some of your followers. On Instagram, on average only 10-20 % of your followers will like a post organically. The rest depends on engagement: who regularly interacts with your content, gets more of it. Low reach often means that your content generates too little interaction for the algorithm.

Do follower numbers play a role in reach?

With TikTok: no. For Instagram and Facebook: conditionally. TikTok's algorithm displays content regardless of follower numbers - the decisive factor is the Performance (watch time, interactions). Large accounts have an advantage on Instagram and Facebook, but here, too, the primary factor is Commitment. A small account with a high interaction rate beats a large one with a passive audience.

How often should I post on social media?

It depends on the platform. On TikTok and Instagram Reels applies: Regularity beats frequency. 3-5 posts per week with consistent quality work better than daily mass without strategy. LinkedIn prefers 2-3 posts per week. Facebook tolerates 1-2 posts daily. More important than frequency: Consistency and Quality.

Can I trick algorithms?

Perhaps in the short term, long-term no. Techniques such as engagement pods (groups that like each other) or purchased likes are recognized and penalized by platforms. Algorithms are constantly learning. What works: Authentic engagement through good content that encourages interaction. No shortcuts, but sustainable reach.

Social media algorithms: Friend or foe? Neither - they are tools.
