It serves as a guide for <a href=\"https:\/\/csw.agency\/en\/services\/artificial-intelligence\/\">AI systems<\/a>, to understand and process web content more efficiently and in line with the content owner's preferences.<\/p>\n<h2>Functionality and structure<\/h2>\n<p>Similar to the established <code>robots.txt<\/code>-file for <a href=\"https:\/\/csw.agency\/en\/glossar\/search-engine-optimization-seo\/\">Search engine crawler<\/a> the <code>llms.txt<\/code>-file in the root directory of a website (e.g. <code>yourdomain.com\/llms.txt<\/code>) are placed. However, their primary aim is not to prevent crawling altogether, but rather to provide context and instructions on how to use the content.<\/p>\n<p>The file is usually formatted as a Markdown document, which makes it easy to read for both humans and AI systems. A typical <code>llms.txt<\/code>-file:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An H1 title with the name of the project or website.<\/li>\n<li>A blockquote with a short summary of the project that provides the most important information for understanding the content.<\/li>\n<li>Organized sections with relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/csw.agency\/en\/glossar\/internal-linking\/\">Links<\/a> to more detailed content or documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are also considerations for variants such as <code>llms-full.txt<\/code>, which provides the entire content in a single file to make it easier for LLMs to access comprehensive documentation.<\/p>\n<h2>Significance for webmasters and the AI landscape<\/h2>\n<p>The introduction of <code>llms.txt<\/code> addresses several challenges in dealing with AI systems and web content. Modern websites are often complex, use <a href=\"https:\/\/csw.agency\/en\/glossar\/javascript\/\">JavaScript<\/a> and dynamic content that is difficult for LLM crawlers to interpret.
